Actually nobody could hinder ADR to treat Armenians as Armenian Republic treated its Muslim citizens. Leaving aside the fact that there was not a Muslim minister in any Armenian government, as Professor Ronald Grigor Suny wrote: "their [Dashnaks'] terrorization of local Muslims, reprehensible as it was from a moral piont of view, nevertheless shifted the democratic balance in the area around Erevan in favor of Armenians" (R.G.Suny. Looking toward Ararat, 1993, page 138)<BR/><BR/>Coming to the issue who built Baku, all its citizens, regardless of their ethnicity built it, and yes, Armenians contributed a lot, but nevertheless, the most prominent buildings were built by Muslims, namely Ismailiyye, Mukhtarov's and Tagiyev's palaces, Taghiyev theatre. Even the greatest contribution to Baku's main Cathedral, Alexander-Nevski, came from Muslim donations. The only prominent buildings built by Armenians that I remember now, are Aramyan's Palace (now SOCAR building),and Mailov theatre (now Opera). By the way, never it should be forgetten that the money nevertheless came from Baku's oil, regardless who built the buildings, Nobels, Russian administration, Azeris or ArmeniansL. I don't think you can neglect the fact Armenians played such a huge role in Baku through the 19th and early 20th century and that a natural extension of that was holding positions in the government.<BR/>They built most of that city, whether or not Azeris want to remember that now. The notion of "nation-state" had not reached the region and looking back on early Azerbaijan as land of the Azeris always dominated by Azeris (as I believe most Azeris would just assume it was like these days) is not accurate.Danielbeasthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00403576886890203957noreply@blogger.com
