Strange things happens around the city.
Just a few hours ago, the statue of Meshadi Azizbekov, one of the 26 Baku Commissars, was removed in a presence of local officials. According to their comments, the statue will be returned after being renovated. However, everybody knows that the park where the statue was situated has just been renovated and opened to public. Thus, why didn't they managed to renovate the statue during the renovation of the park? Besides, what happened to Narimanov's bust and Musabekov's statue from other city parks? Though they were not among 26 Baku Commissars, they also were revolutionaries. And do not forget that recently, they demolished the monument dedicated to 26 Baku Commissars.
I am not a communist, rather I am a fan of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which those revolutionaries fought with and at the end managed to depose. However, to demolish statues is purely a job fit for barbarians. You can demolish a monument, and build a fountain instead, but you can't erase history. Let's see how this restoration ends.
The second news is rather peculiar - Shahidler Mosque, one of the biggest Sunni mosques in [Shiite Azerbaijan] is closed for renovation. According to Muzaffer Shahin, Counsellor for Religious Affairs of the Turkish embassy, the dome of the mosque has cracks and needs urgent repairs, as well as electrical equipments need to be replaced. And added Shahin, the mosque can be opened within a few days. LOL! Mr. Shahin, you can change electrical equipments, but how can you repair the dome of the mosque within these "a few days"?
Baku has two main Sunni mosques, moderate Shahidler Mosque is curated by the Turkish and visited by moderate Sunnis and diplomatic corps. While the second one - Abu Bakr mosque is generally seen as a nest of radical Islam and Islamism in Azerbaijan, and operated by Salafists (Wahhabites). Incidentally, it was also recently closed by authorities after a granade exploded inside the mosque killing several people and injuring its imam.
