It was really a coup de théâtre! I opened my email and found a message saying that "Ireli" ("Forward") Countrywide Youth Movement has dissolved itself. Astonished, I went to their homepage, and encountered a declaration announcing their dissolution. Then, I rang to my friend, a former "Irali" member, who still has some connections with the movement, and asked: "What a comedy they play? Why did "Ireli" dissolve itself?" He was taken aback: "Really? "Ireli" dissolved itself?".
The news was so out of the blue that, not only ordinary "Ireli" members, but even such news portals as day.az were belated to the news. So what happened? Why a movement so carefully and painstakingly built during four years, was dissolved in a moment? Who dissolved it and why many "Ireli" members weren't aware of it? And why no reasons were given to such abrupt action?
"Ireli" Countrywide Youth Movement was a very controversial organisation from the beginning. Founded in the eve of 2005 Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan, when there were widespread speculations about another orange revolution in another post-Soviet country, a pro-government movement managed to attract hundreds of active young people to its rows, and formed a strong force both loyal, and useful to the leadership of the republic. During four years of its existence (2005-2008), "Ireli" mobilized hundreds of its members to conduct numerous projects - all aimed at strengthening the support for the government.
So, one explanation says that as there aren't any serious opponents left for the current ruling elite, and no one left to fight with, therefore "Ireli" as an instrument no more is needed. Second explanation says that during these four years "Ireli" itself has become a serious opponent with ambitious leadership and panem-et-circenses mobs, therefore it has to be disbanded.
Who knows?
