Magomayev resurrected for Eurovision 2009

This year Azerbaijan made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest. Elnur and Samir spent a lot of public money, but showed a mediocre performance. Immediately after Dima Bilan grasped the victory, and while whole Europe started to talk about the increasing and unbearable partisanship in the contest, Azeris started to speculate - who will go to Eurovision 2009...

Now, it seems that, our candidate is ready. Somewhere and Somebody has already decided. Just read this piece very carefully (sorry, in Russian only) and read between lines. Interesting enough, who is this "new (or second) Muslim Magomayev" and "macho with strong vocal"?

Hmmm, it seems that, we are going to hear about our policeman from Youtube, or piatikantrop very very soon, and in a new image - as a Resurrection of late Magomayev - a new Magomayev! Leaving aside the ethical side of this advertisement-and-promotion campaign based on recently deceased Magomayev's reputation, I want to draw your attention to one issue - do you think that all of these is to represent Azerbaijan? No! Just read this passage:

А по окончании этого престижного конкурса «новому Муслиму Магомаеву» будет куда легче покорять российскую эстраду, а с нею и все пространство бывшего СССР.
For me personally, it is not a big problem who would represent Azerbaijan in Eurovision 2009 - but what really concerns me are these three things:

(a) Not to use Magomayev's name for Someone's promotion and advertisement;

(b) Not to discredit the previous Azeri participants in order to praise this new one (I strongly suspect that the word "macho" was used in the news piece deliberately to contrast the New Magomayev with homoeroticism of Elnur & Samir's performance); and

(c) Not to use our public money for maybe million-dollars-worth Resurrection Mission. World Economic Crisis is already treatening to empty our coffers, and Azerbaijan can't afford another costly Eurovision Adventure.

Well, I don't think Elnur and Samir were mediocre. I thought the song was in the spirit of Eurovision (which is usually more about fun than it is about music) and they put in a great performance, especially when you consider how much could have gone wrong given the vocal demands of the song.

Anyway, I hope you have a proper national competition for next year and the right act goes through. Personally, I'd like to see some kind of Turkish-sounding pop song going through sung by someone like Roya or similar, but let's see.

Looking forward to hearing your opinion on Azerbaijan's entry this year. Nice that an unknown is given a chance. Hope she has a great voice and a good song.
